Главной типичной чертой произведений в жанре постапокалиптики является развитие сюжета в мире (или ограниченной его части) со специфической историей. В прошлом этого мира цивилизация достигла высокого уровня социального и технического развития, но затем мир пережил некую глобальную катастрофу, в результате которой цивилизация и большинство созданных ею богатств были уничтожены. В качестве катастрофы, уничтожившей мир, чаще всего используются: третья мировая война с применением оружия массового поражения (ядерного, химического или биологического), вторжение инопланетян, восстание машин под предводительством искусственного разума (роботов), пандемия, падение астероида, появление доисторических чудовищ, климатическая или иные катастрофы.

Первое классическое произведение этого жанра — роман Ричарда Джеффериса "После Лондона", появившийся в далёком 1885 году. Затем были "Алая чума" Джека Лондона, "Машина времени" и "Война миров" Герберта Уэллса, "Смерть травы" Джона Кристофера, "Мальвиль" Робера Мерля, "Земля без людей" Джорджа Стюарта. Позднее "Молота Люцифера" Ларри Нивена и Джерри Пурнеля, а также "Долина проклятий" Роджера Желязны. К постапокалиптической теме в своём творчестве обращалось в разное время множество известнейших мастеров - это Стивен Кинг и Роберт Шекли, Гарри Гаррисон и Рей Бредбери, Айзек Азимов и Артур Кларк, Клиффорд Саймак и другие.
